Handbook on Integrated Ocean Management in the Mediterranean

This Handbook aims to provide an overview of the Integrated Ocean Management (IOM) topic and its state of implementation in the Mediterranean, through an ecosystem approach and targeted communication strategies.
To complement the knowledge and understanding of IOM, a series of good practices relevant to the subject are presented. Several case studies have been collected from research and environmental conservation organizations, to provide a comprehensive overview of different approaches that can be adapted and replicated in different geographical contexts.

The Handbook is addressed primarily to experts, early-career professionals, and students involved in ocean management-related fields. It is thought both as a source of replicable good practices and successful case studies for experts, as well as an educational tool for early-career practitioners and students in the multidisciplinary subject of IOM.

The book was developed in the context of the MARINE_ECOMED Project supported by the Erasmus + European Programme over a three years duration, from late 2018 until the end of 2021.
The MARINE_ECOMED Project was framed to enhance research and cooperation within the Mediterranean region in the field of sustainable management of marine and coastal areas, through the development of innovative communication and education strategies. The project has been implemented by a strategic partnership of academic institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), coordinated by the University Iuav of Venice.

Finally the book integrates the professional experiences, knowledge, and approaches from the project partner organizations, that are located in different Mediterranean coastal countries: University Iuav of Venice and Tethys Research Institute from Italy, Environmental Organization iSea and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) from Greece, SUBMON Environmental Organization from Spain, and the Aix-Marseille University (AMU) from France.
