IUAV

Francesco Musco

Francesco Musco is associate professor in Urban Planning at the Department of Architecture and Arts – Iuav University of Venice, Project scientific coordinator.

+

Trained in architecture and urban planning, completed in 2007 his PhD in “Analysis and Governance for Sustainable Development”. Director of the Master program in Planning and Policies for Cities, Territory and Environment and Dean of the Erasmus Mundus Master Course on Maritime Spatial Planning (University of Seville, University of Azores). Deputy Rector for Research (mandate 2018-2021) and member of the Board of Directors of CORILA Consortium for Coordination of research activities concerning the Venice Lagoon System.

He obtained the national scientific qualification for the role of Full Professor in Urban and Territorial Urban Planning and Design. At Iuav he taught courses in Sustainable Design of Territory, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Spatial Planning and Design for Climate Change, Maritime Spatial Planning. He also taught and developed research activities in Italy and abroad in the universities of Lousville (Center for the Environmental Policy and Management), Drexel University of Philadelphia (School of Environmental Engineering), Parma (School of Economics), Bologna (School of Engineering), Reading (Department of Real Estate and Planning), Barcelona (UAB, Geography), Alghero-Sassari (Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning), Seville (Department of Geography).

Research interests: Urban planning and topics of sustainability, urban regeneration, policy design, urban resilience, climate change and strategies of mitigations and adaptions (climate proof design & planning), energy and environmental planning, maritime spatial planning and coastal zones management.

Federico Fabbri

Federico Fabbri, research assistant. Master in Coastal Management achieved in 2014. Project manager

Awarded with a two-years full scholarship for the participation at the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Maritime Spatial Planning, concluded in 2017 with a thesis focused on investigating the application of dynamic ocean management strategies in the Mediterranean and the potential integration of such strategies in maritime spatial planning. His main research interest consists in marine environment planning and management with the scope of natural ecosystems conservation and science dissemination. Since 2017 he has been research assistant at the Planning Climate Change Research Group of IUAV University of Venice, where he collaborates to the research and to the development of European maritime spatial planning projects in the Mediterranean Sea.

Elena Gissi

Elena Gissi is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Ecology at Iuav University of Venice.

Her main research interest is in ecosystem-based management in coastal and marine areas, with the specific focus on conservation planning and maritime spatial planning in the Mediterranean Sea. Elena is the scientific coordinator for Iuav of different European collaborative projects, among which the projects SUPREME (SUpporting maritime spatial Planning in the Eastern MEditerranean; 2017-2019), SIMWESTMED (Supporting Maritime Spatial Planning in the Western Mediterranean region; 2017-2019) and ADRIPLAN (Adriatic and Ionian Maritime Spatial Planning; 2013-2015). Since 2012 she coordinates the Erasmus Mundus Master Course in MSP (EMMCMSP), delivered by the University Iuav of Venice (lead partner), the University of Seville, and the University of the Azores. She is lecturer of “Ecosystem-based management of marine and coastal areas” in the EMMCMSP, and of “Environmental Analysis and Assessment” in the undergraduate program of Spatial and Regional Planning at Iuav University of Venice. Elena is co-chair of the working group on “Area-based management” in the COST Action CA 15217 OceanGov Ocean Governance for sustainability Challenges, Options and the Role of Science, and also member of the COST Action CA 15121 MARCONS Advancing marine conservation in the European and contiguous seas.

Niccoló Bassan

Niccoló Bassan Architect and Planner. MSc Maritime Spatial Planning.

From 2017 he is a research and teaching assistant at the University Iuav of Venice; research title: “Planning and Design for Seascapes: tools and techniques of planning to support the European directive on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) in the Mediterranean”. He is also currently collaborating with CORILA as a Consultant on maritime related projects. His studies and work are focused on European Projects specifically on the themes of MSP, land-sea interactions, ecosystem-based management, ocean governance, community engagement and ocean literacy.

Elisabetta Manea

Elisabetta Manea Post-Doc researcher, PhD in Marine Biology and Ecology.

From 2017 she is a researcher at the University Iuav of Venice. Her studies cover:

  • ecosy­stem-based approach integration within Marine Spatial Planning and environmental management
  • methods to assess marine ecosystem services to inform decision making processes for marine resources ma­nagement
  • diversity and ecological interactions between benthic communities.

She is involved in different EU Projects with the aim of supporting the incorporation of ecosystem-based management and ecosystem services assessment in the context of the MSP Directive im­plementation in the Mediterranean.

AIX DE MARSEILLE

Jean-Cristophe Poggiale

My background is in mathematics and more precisely in geometry. I started to apply some geometrical methods to the study of ecological models in my PhD thesis.

Now, I’m working in the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO), in the team dealing with Marine Ecology and Biodiversity. My group develops and applies mathematical methods to analyse marine ecosystems. I am interested in dynamical systems theory and its applications in ecology. I’m also tying to promote the field of Theoretical Biology, I’m a member of the French speaking Society of Theoretical Biology (SFBT), of the European Society of Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB), of the Society of Mathematical Biology (SMB) and of the French Society of Mathematics (SMF).

Sandrine Ruitton

She is assistant professor in marine biology, she has skills in spatial planning and ecosystem-based management and applied them for problems of conservation and mitigation in the Bay of Marseille and in the Northern Mediterranean Sea.

Delphine Thibault

She is assistant professor in marine biology, she has skills in zooplankton and is mainly interested in the role of gellyfishes on the functionning of marine ecosystems. She applies her skills in various ecosystems.

Daniela Banaru

She is assistant professor in marine biology, she has skills in the role of fish communities on the functionning of marine ecosystems, she also applies isotopy to unravel the structure of food webs, she mainly applies her skills in the Northern Mediterranean Sea.

Thomas Changeux

He is engineer in marine biology, with main interest in spatial planning and ecosystem-based management, both in marine and terrestrial (aquatic) ecosystems.

Andrea Doglioli

He is assistant professor in physical oceanography. He develops models to analyze the role of physics on the dynamics of marine communities in coastal environments.

Valéry Michotey

She is professor in marine microbiology. She works on the role of bacteria on the functionning of marine ecosystems, in the water column and in the sediments.

Thierry Thibaut

He is assistant professor in marine biology, mainly interested in the role of phytoplankton and macroalgae on the functionning of benthic ecosystems in the Northern Mediterranean Sea.

Antonio Mazaris

Professor at the School of Biology, Aristotle University of Greece.

Vasiliki (Vessa) Markantonatou

Post Doc Fellow in the Aristotle University of Greece, she is a marine ecologist, specializing in marine conservation and ecosystem-based management of marine and coastal resources.

Her main research activities focus on systematic conservation planning and the development of marine spatial plans and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) networks, using spatial prioritization decision support tools (i.e., Marxan, Marxan with Zones). Currently, she is working on the development of integrated conservation planning across multiple realms (terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems) targeting the protection of marine and coastal biodiversity. Her research interests also include monitoring and assessing human footprint on marine biodiversity, and the analysis of social networks for enhancing stakeholder participation in MPA management.

She has been actively involved in several EU projects related to marine spatial planning, ecosystem-based management and MPAs, among which are the Protomedea (Towards the establishment of Marine Protected Area Networks in the Eastern Mediterranean); MARISCA (ΜΑRItime Spatial planning for the protection and Conservation of the biodiversity in the Aegean sea); MARCONS COST Action CA 15217 (Advancing marine conservation in the European and contiguous seas); ITN-MMMPA (Monitoring Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas); MAREA-MEDISEH (MEDIterranean SEnsitive Habitats); ODEMM (Options for Delivering Ecosystem-Based Marine Management); Coralfish (Ecosystem based management of corals, fish and fisheries in the deep waters of Europe and beyond); MEECE (Marine Ecosystem Evolution in a Changing Environment). She has been awarded with 3 European (Marie Curie) and national fellowships to support her PhD and PostDoc research on systematic conservation planning, and has co-authored in more than 15 scientific publications in international scientific journals.

Georgia Pozoukidou

is an Assistant Professor of Urban Planning, Policies and Urban Land Use Models, Faculty of Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

She holds an engineering degree in Spatial Planning and Regional Development from the University of Thessaly, Faculty of Engineering, Volos, Greece. She also holds a MSc in City Planning and Regional Development and a Doctoral Degree in City Planning from the School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Her scientific interests focus on spatial planning with emphasis on spatial models and the use of quantitative methods to understand land-use interactions. Before her appointment as a faculty member (January 2013 to present), she worked in public bodies gaining significant experience through her positions in the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, Department of Traditional Settlements and Building Heritage and the Prefecture of Kilkis at the Office of Land Use and Urban Planning. In the private sector she worked as a consultant in Greece and abroad through her positions in SH Putman Associates (Delaware, USA), Sasaki Associates (Boston, USA), ARISTA Planning Consultants (Wynnewood, USA), Food Trust (Philadelphia, USA), and in EUROTEC Consulting Group (Thessaloniki, GR).

She has participated in numerous research projects and published more than 70 scientific paper in international and national journals.

SUBMON

Manel Gazo

Director of SUBMON and also Associate Professor at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

He obtained his PhD in 2002 studying the biology of Mediterranean monk seals and implications on their conservation. Also holds a MSc in Marine Aquaculture and a MSc on Direction and Management of NGOs. He is an external consultant on Marine Mammals for UNEP MAP- RAC/SPA. His professional experience has evolved around three main areas: management of conservation programs, studies directed towards the protection of marine species and habitats and direction and management of environmental organizations. He is an active member of the European Marine Sciences Educator association (EMSEA) and on if the founders of the EMSEA-Mediterranean with the aim to spread Ocean Literacy among Mediterranean countries.

Alba Tojero

Biologist, with an MSc in Oceanography and Marine Environmental Management from the University of Barcelona.

She began her professional career in the seal rescue centre Zeehondencentrum (The Netherlands), where she developed her seal care knowledge and volunteer management skills. Since July 2016 she works in SUBMON as project technician within the conservation, outreach and education area. During this time, she has been involved in local, state and European projects related to action plans and management, environmental education, training and communication programs. She took part of the Sea Change Project which aims to establish a fundamental “Sea Change” in the way European citizens view their relationship with the sea by using the Ocean Literacy concept. Also, she is currently involved in another Erasmus+ project, VIRTUE-s, which focuses on developing innovative, digital and practical tools to increase the quality of teaching natural sciences using ocean-based examples.

Mariluz Parga

Bachelor in Veterinary Medicine. MSc in Wildlife Health and Conservation.

Her professional experience has always focused around the medicine and conservation of non-domestic animals, working several years in exotic animal clinics, zoos and wildlife rescue centers in the UK. She is partner of SUBMON since 2008, working in the management of national and international projects, external consultancies and marine animal health. Since 2003 she has specialized in the handling and medicine of marine animals, more specifically sea turtles in relation to their incidental capture by fisheries. She is member of IUCN’s SSC Wildlife Health Specialist Group and veterinary consultant of the sea turtle longline by-catch reduction program of the Eastern Pacific.

TETHYS

Simone Panigada

He’s Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS), President of the Tethys Research Institute, and contract Professor at the University of Milan (Marine Biology and Ecology).

Simone is member of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the Pelagos Sanctuary, of the Italian Delegation to the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission, of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group and of the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force. He holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Milan and a Ph.D. in Environmental Biology from the University of Siena. Since 1992 he has been involved in research and conservation of cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea. In 2001, he started focusing on the assessment of anthropogenic impacts on cetaceans, dealing with collisions between ships and large whales, and plays the role of ship strike coordinator for the International Whaling Commission. Since 2009, he has been involved as project manager and PI of a series of aerial surveys  – both in winter and summer –  to estimate abundance and density of cetacean populations in the central Mediterranean. Simone is currently the Scientific Coordinator of the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative (ASI), a large scale, regional survey (both aerial and ship based) to provide density and abundance estimates of cetaceans, turtles, marine birds and large vertebrates over the entire Mediterranean Basin. Simone has been the Chair of the European Cetacean Society (ECS, 2007-2011), the largest European association of cetacean scientists, with about 500 professional members from over 30 countries. Joan Gonzalvo

Born in Barcelona, is a Catalan biologist whose main research interest is the conservation of the marine environment and, more specifically, the study and conservation of cetaceans.

Joan holds a Ph.D. in Biodiversity from the University of Barcelona. In 1999 he started his collaboration with the Tethys Research Institute. Since 2007, he is member of Tethys’ Board of Directors. Between 2000 and 2005, Joan was a member of the Group for the Study and Conservation of Marine Mammals at the University of Barcelona. He has participated in a number of diverse projects involving work on dolphin-fisheries interactions, dolphin population estimates and behavioural studies with the aim of producing sound information to promote conservation action. For almost two decades he has spent 1,000+ hours observing dolphin groups in their natural environment in different Mediterranean locations and has designed and executed numerous public awareness campaigns. Joan is experienced in research methods including ship-based, land-based and aerial surveys on cetaceans, individual photo-identification, behavioural sampling, remote biopsy sampling, cetacean dissection techniques and tissue sampling on stranded animals. He is regularly engaged in training and teaching young scientist wanting to gain experience in cetacean research.

In addition, Joan has worked as consultant of the UNEP’s Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA) and for the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS) on the preparation, among others, of National Action Plans for the Conservation of Cetaceans in Syria and Lebanon, respectively. In March 2015 became a Council member of the European Cetacean Society (Vice-Chair). In November 2016 he was appointed member of the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS for the 2017-19 triennium. Since 2006 his research is carried out mainly in western Greece, where he leads the Ionian Dolphin Project. He speaks Catalan, Spanish, English, Italian and Greek.

Elena Politi

She is the Tethys coordinator in this project and she is in charge of the communication aspects, including the web site and the Canvas platform development.

Elena Politi, biologist, has collaborated full-time with the Tethys Research Institute from 1991 to 2010. Initially involved in data collection and analysis on dolphins in Croatia, in 1993 she founded the Ionian Dolphin Project, a long-term project on the socio-ecology of two resident coastal dolphins populations in the Ionian Greece, which she directed until 2003. From 2003 to 2010 she has actively managed the Tethys Research Institute as Executive Director first and Financial Manager later on. In her career within Tethys, Elena has been involved in several research campaigns run by the Institute, including surveys in the Caribbean Sea, in the Canary Islands, in the former Spanish Sahara, and several Mediterranean areas. She has been member of the Tethys Board of Director’s from 1994 to 2016, and has been Tethys vice-president from 1996 to 2000.
From 2015 she works as freelance web designer, managing, among others, several web site projects connected to the activitities undertaken by the Tethys Research Institute.

ISEA

Anastasia Charitou

Anastasia is an educator holding a BSc from 2012 and an MSc in Environmental Education (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) (2013- 2016).

She has been working in the educational field of mainstream and special education since 2013. She is currently working in iSea, responsible for the organisation and implementation of iSea’ s environmental education and raising awareness projects. She is also the director of the beach clean- ups and environmental education campaign “Prosfero” since 2018. Anastasia has conducted more than 30 school visits and 20 workshops for students of different levels and adults on the behalf of iSea. She was also the author of the first field guide of environmental education in special education. Her main scientific interests concern environmental education, children’ s knowledge and perception about the marine environment and animal ethics. Anastasia will act as the project manager of MARINE ECOMED on behalf of iSea.

Ioanni Giovos

Ioannis Giovos is an ichthyologist, holding a BSc from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and an MSc in Fisheries Biology and Management from the same university.

He has been working in the field of marine conservation for almost a decade participating and directing several projects regarding the conservation of marine megafauna in the Mediterranean Sea. Ioannis is member of the ICES Working Group on the History of Fish and Fisheries and in the Task Force for Sharks and Rays of the Mediterranean Science Commission (CIESM). He is currently working in iSea acting as responsible for the activities related to fisheries. His scientific interests include conservation policy and elasmobranch conservation and has published more than 20 articles in peer-review scientific journals and more than 20 scientific communications in international conferences.

Nikolaos Doumpas

Nikolaos Doumpas holds a BSc by the Marine Science Department, Aegean University and he continues his studies in the Department of Biology in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with a MSc in Aquacultures.

He has participated in two internships in the field of fish hatcheries and aquaponics in Lesvos Island and in Amsterdam respectively. He first joined iSea as member on 2016 and on 2018 he became partner. Currently he is the director of the Alien species pillar of iSea and the project manager of the long-term citizen science project “Is it alien to you? Share it!!!”. Nikos is experienced in interacting fishers and collecting data in the context of Local Ecological Knowledge. In addition, he is experienced in using social media for research. Ha has participated in several international conferences and more than 5 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. In 2018, he was invited by IUCN-Med to present his work in the context of the workshop “Marine invasive species management in the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas”. Last, Nikos is responsible for the dissemination in Greece of the project MARLITER, funded by of the JOP Black Sea Basin 2014-2020, as an external partner of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
